The Barnes Foundation Museum
Philadelphia art collector Albert C. Barnes (1872–1951) chartered the Barnes in 1922 to teach people from all walks of life how to look at art. Over three decades, he collected some of the world’s most important impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern paintings, including works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso.
The mission of the Barnes is to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.
Current Exhibition
Matisse & Renoir: New Encounters at the Barnes
Experience a fresh perspective on two important modern painters. Two innovators in modern European art, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841–1919) and Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) were also among Dr. Albert Barnes’s favorite painters. He collected their artwork voraciously over the course of four decades. On view in the Roberts Gallery, Matisse & Renoir: New Encounters at the Barnes presents 34 of these works in a display that reflects the expansion of our educational program, emphasizing the objects’ art-historical context.
