Underground Railroad Talk with EJ Murphy

EJ Murphy, Project Coordinator for the Waverly Community House’s Destination Freedom: Underground Railroad Walking Tour of Waverly will host talks to coincide with the Everhart’s new exhibition Through the Darkness to the Light: Photographs from Along the Underground Railroad, on view through January 5, and WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart: Harriet Tubman. Murphy, an educator and public historian from Scranton, PA, will discuss the Underground Railroad as it pertains to the local history of Northeastern Pennsylvania, an important stop on the way from the American South to Canada. Snow Much Fun Community Day

Celebrate the fun festivities of winter at the third annual Snow Much Fun Community Day at the Everhart Museum! Join us on Sunday, December 8 as we revel in the season by celebrating the holiday traditions of cultures around the world. The event features free admission to the Museum from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and enjoy free activities, crafts, live music, and much more from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.! Through a variety of hands-on craft stations, explore the joys of the holiday season as you participate in activities that highlight the significance of different cultural celebrations. From making paper Matryoshka dolls for the Russian New Year, to creating paper diyas for Diwali, to designing paper kinaras for Kwanzaa, each station offers a unique opportunity to learn and engage with diverse traditions. WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart: Harriet Tubman

Join us for the second installment of WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart as Lisa Mazzarella hosts a special free screening of the PBS documentary Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom, showing 2:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11. WVIA will also welcome special guest speaker EJ Murphy, local historian and program director of Destination Freedom: Underground Railroad walking tour in Waverly. WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart is. monthly screening series programmed especially for senior citizens. While this event is free to attend, you must register in advance, as space is limited.

WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart: All Creatures Great and Small

Join us for the third installment of WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart as Lisa Mazzarella hosts a special free preview screening of the PBS show All Creatures Great and Small on Wednesday, January 8 from 2:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. WVIA Wednesdays at the Everhart is a free monthly screening series programmed in partnership with WVIA Public Media especially for senior citizens. One Wednesday afternoon per month, a PBS documentary tied into the Everhart’s mission of natural history, science, art, and humanities will be screened in the Museum’s galleries. Knox Mine Disaster Film Reception

Join us Friday, January 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. as we observe Anthracite Heritage Month with a special reception for the exhibition Northeastern Pennsylvania Coalfields: Preservation, Praise, Promise, on view through January 26, and a presentation on the Knox Mine Disaster by documentary filmmaker David Brocca. During the evening, Brocca creator of the 2016 film Knox Mine Disaster, which chronicles the catastrophic mine flood in Jenkins Township, PA in 1959, will discuss the tragedy and its lasting legacy while presenting a variety of artifacts from the event. Guests will also have the chance to view Northeastern Pennsylvania Coalfields, which showcases the coal heritage of the region through art; coal mining tools and wares; and geological specimens. Learn about the region’s coal history while enjoying a fine selection of beers and seltzers from Susquehanna Brewing Co. and listening to tunes by Lex Romane, who will be playing an assortment of collected songs and original material that anthologize the history and tough life of the coal miner.
